Day 2 — Guten Tag!

We are in Germany!  The flight was longish, nine and a half hours.  Plus we picked up nine time zones.  So we got in around 9:30am Frankfort time, but that’s just after midnight Seattle time.  We knew we needed to get some sleep, but that’s easier-said-than-done.   I doubt either of us slept more than two hours total.  The service on the flight was great.  Lots of food, and it was good too.  We were in Business Class, so we had a lot of room and very fancy seats that adjust about a hundred ways.  Still could not get truly comfortable!

The airport here is HUGE.  We parked the jet, well the pilot did, a long way from the terminal and they had us hitchhike to the building.  Ok, that’s not true.  The bussed us to the terminal.  We passed row after row of jets, and big ones too.  Lots of 747s and A340s.  They make our A330 seem small.

Right now we’re in the Business Class lounge with about a three hour layover until we leave for Stuttgart.  We’re going to sit for a little while then try to find a store that sells cell phones, or a ‘Handy’ in German.  So far not speaking German has not been a problem,  but then again we’ve only bought bottles of water (Wasser) for 5.40 Euros (about eight  bucks) for two!  I’m still waiting for a chance to use the only German sentence I really feel confident saying… Vo ist meine Katze?

  1. Glad you made it safe.

In my “vast” world travel experience (hah), I have found a late morning nap after arrival, then PUSH through that first day so that you are so exhausted you have to sleep when night comes, seems to work to reset my clock to the current time. Somehow, I always have an easier time adjusting on my trip than I do on my return. I guess I am more interested in my surroundings on my trip. It also helps if a museum is only open on the first day of your arrival. Les, aren’t you glad we made that museum in Dublin? We had one chance to see the Tara Brooch and the Book of Kells.

Now, get a baby put in your arms on your first full day in town…..your sleep doesn’t get back to normal for 18 years!

I’ve heard exposing yourself to 30 minutes of sun at 9am resets your biological clock.

OK– did you learn to say “where is my computer?” in German?

Glad to hear you took some clothes!

  2. Actually, ‘Katze’ is cat. And since we don’t have one, I can’t use it. But… for a while I came in the door every night and shouted out, “Wo ist meine Frau?” But she respond in the somewhat un-official, Shuuut Uuuup!

  3. I generally use Kirsten’s method. A short catnap and then get out and do stuff until you would normally eat dinner and go to bed. Kot – I am soooo glad that we went to the Dublin Museum because it was incredible. But, if I recall correctly, the Book of Kells was in the library of Trinity College (which I think we also saw on our first day).

Bill – I thought you used Berlitz to learn German. If you want, I can tell you how to call someone a dumb a******. I’d put in the full word but I don’t know if any kids are or will be reading the blog.
